Tyler Hart: In the Present
Tyler Hart: In the Present
Virtual Exhibition, Stormwater Studios, December 7 - 18, 2020
My work is a collection of moments in between time. Passing moments spent waiting for life to move forward and the unexpected aspects of dreaming to be, to do better. My choice in subject matter works as a formal note to redirect my attention from an imagined future towards a present reality. My work is interested in the experience of hindsight, the passage of time as well as the stationary moment. The core of my interests revolves around the question of whether there is enough time. My material choices of graphite and charcoal on paper further the potency of this question. These materials demand time for their use in an image, a form of tax taken from my work. This tax creates a strong sense of focus and demands that I pay close attention to my mark making so that each step in the process endeavors to be better than the last. My approach to making an image is not beholden to any one practice but aims to find a unification between traditional techniques, academic idealization, and contemporary ideological exploration. This approach is one that brings fear into my practice. In between my sessions I am forced to wonder if the process is working, whether it can be completed or comprehended. For my audience, I can hope only to grant them an outlet for the consideration of time, for those insignificant moments, perhaps even those moments spent looking at my work.
