February 7, 2020
Professor of Studio Art, Brent Dedas, participated in the 2019 Venice Biennale at the Art/NaturSci Pavilion Exhibition, Equilibrium. Dedas' studio practice focuses on non-traditional mark-making, and his most recent work is a collaboration between living honey bees and light-- merging " aspects of printmaking, photography and drawing to create works on paper using the cyanotype process."
The Equilibrium exhibition featured works by artists from around the world. "The question we present is, “How do we find balance within the dramatic shifts caused by pollution, rising waters, and man-made devastation on earth and in the seas?” The exhibition statement posed the idea of finding a solution to climate change: "Large-scale ecosystem reclamation has been tried and tested in Africa, China, and the Middle East. Projects in sustainability build functioning economies, bring food, and improve human life. Multidisciplinary making is necessary for all the system changes needed for the survival of most species on planet earth, especially for us humans. Individual greed and ingrained patriarchal views can limit us no longer. We are nature kind and by working collectively, we can recreate paradise."
The 8th issue of Italia Arte, Anno 15 - (139), covered Dedas's participation in the Equilibrium exhibition, which was sponsored by the German-Italian Cultural Association (ACIT).
International artists from Australia, Belgium, China, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Switzerland, the UK and the USA are featured along with Pulitzer Prize-nominated Yale University Ornithologist Richard Prum and world-renowned ecologist and videographer John D. Liu.
