"The best way to learn about a new city is to draw it."
Professor of Design Meena Khalili has created a series of over 500 illustrations in a project known as Drawn Daily, a daily practice to document and capture life around her. Her most recent illustrations feature popular Columbia locations frequented by UofSC students, faculty, and staff.
This spring, Drawn Daily is traveling to two exhibitions in the United States-- Storytellers, a national juried exhibition at Missouri Western State University and Form, Line, Space, Shape, a national juried exhibition at Middle Tennessee State University.
Beyond the United States, Drawn Daily was published in UPPERCASE Magazine. This popular international publication based in Calgary showcases the newest in commercial art and design. "My drawings reflect a daily intimate ritual of discovery in hopes of capturing the life of the city by using pen, ink, and collage in travel-sized books," she shares with UPPERCASE. "Each city is a living organism; some of the businesses archived were closed down by the project's final day, some spaces revitalized. The unique signage speaks to each city's vibrant eclecticism."
