Alyson Fisher: The Apple Did Not Fall
January 22 - February 16, 2020
Every female is a daughter, a sister, a mother. This series reflects my experience in a family made mostly of strong women. I aim to depict the phenomena in female relationships that focus on the coexistence of empathy and competition. The eyes of each woman are obstructed or shielded, cutting off the audience’s window for identification and leaving one with the obscure intimacy of gaze, body, clothes. My goal is to simultaneously exhaust the tired cliché that the sterility of confident women negates their fertility, and to delineate the equality of these women without cutting down the family tree.
My work stems from my relationships with women. I am drawn towards the power they find when combating together, and how that leaves each of them equipped with a unique strength on their own. By investigating my relationships with my mother and sister, I have overcome trauma and replaced it with a deeper understanding and empathy. My work expresses confidence, tied in with symbols of fertility, motherhood, sisterhood, and woman relationships throughout time.
