Amanda Morgado: A Moment Between Spaces
An MFA Thesis Exhibition
April 12 - 16, 2021
Amanda Morgado’s work revolves around creating large-scale installations because she wants these pieces to be experienced, not just viewed. She is interested in digital fabrication and uses combined technological processes to create these installations. Her inspiration comes from observing naturally occurring patterns, interactions with lights and shadows, and her own associations through memories mostly relating to growing up in the woods of Alabama. She got her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and has had work in various galleries and museums.
Artist Statement
My work explores the idea of liminal spaces as transitions between recalled experiences and the physical world around us. Finding and identifying these spaces gives me a sense of wonder because I see them as connections between things that I consider intangible- my memories and experiences- with details of the vastness in the world around me. I think of space, not as an emptiness, but as an unseen backdrop to a world that is partially observed in a physical way- the venation in leaves, the way cracks form in pavement, the way light shines through the branches of a tree- and partially experienced through memory. I want to pull from those small experiences where I felt wonder and put them on a larger, more noticeable scale in hopes of getting viewers to experience them in similar ways.
